Weird Workplace News Labors for your Entertainmant

Red StaplerI really like working the Friday before Labor Day. Not only do I get out early, but the people who usually hassle me are on vacation. And I’m in an extra good mood because this week, there was a plethora of links to do with my favorite pet peeve. Some of these links are only tenuously linked to the workplace, but let’s just pretend they are totally on topic, mmmmkay?

Grammar Nazi: Here I am, Godwinning this entry already. But there’s nothing I like more than picking apart someone else’s grammatical or spelling mistakes. Usually, immediately before or after I make one of my own.

  • What do you think is the most often misspelled word? Judging from my emails at work, it would be “a lot–>alot,” but apparently is it “supersede.”Ummm… guilty, your honor?
  • McCain’s official web site offers up for sale a pen with a most egregious misuse of the apostrophe. Which means I can link to my favorite cartoon. And one of my favorite sites! Today is a good day.
  • Rappers East Coast Avengers’ call for Bill O’Reilly’s death prompted all sorts of poorly written death threats. I guess we now know that it was coming from the people who made that pen.
  • While I admire this duo’s dedication to good grammar, I do take issue with their defacement of a historical sign in a national park. As did others.
  • And finally, our future workforce needs to be more than shamed, in my mind. “Escape goats” and “laxative policies” abound.

This is a favorite subject here at Surviving the Workday. Here are some past links for your delectation:

Abuse of scare quotes

Grammar gaffes by famous people

Crappy writing job ad with equally crappy spelling

Life as a copyeditor

Have a happy Labor Day Weekend, all. Does everybody have the day off?

  1. Oh dear. We do seem preoccupied with grammar, don’t we?

    :)
