Facebook and the Workplace

A few months ago, I officially closed my Facebook account. It will never be deleted because Facebook seems to keep your information indefinitely. But I finally decided that I just couldn’t handle the combination of people from all stages of my life mixing together along with hundreds of shared twenty-year-old photos popping up for everyone to see. Nothing bad happened with the mix of work contacts and friends (and work contacts who are friends), but I think the lack of compartmentalization was pretty confusing for my psyche. (Other workplace stories of Facebook on this blog here).

I thought this video summarized it fairly well:

Facebook and the Workplace has 7 Comments

  1. Ay! That made me squirm … it’s not that far from the truth.

Can’t blame you for leaving Facebook. Place makes me kind of uncomfortable, too …

  2. I like the part where a random guy starts spraypainting his wall….

  3. so glad to hear someone else has given facebook the flick - i found it fun at first, catching up with people I hadn’t seen for years

but then it started getting weird with some people not knowing, or knowing and choosing to ignore, the basics of online etiquette

the blurring of boundaries did not sit well with me - so I deleted all my info in my account and cancelled my account (which apparently will be there forever)

if people are really ‘friends’ they will contact you even if you aren’t on facebook, and there are better ways to utilise online technology to network - in ways that allow the individual more control about privacy etc

  4. I think the blurring of boundaries is a good way to describe it.

  5. That is really funny! I laughed all the way through.

  6. A local school system has fired several people this week for what they posted on Facebook - negative things about their students, suggestive pictures or publicly posted conversation with Facebook friends…

  7. I saw that video - on Facebook - and thought it was hilarious. I really like FB, but can understand why many don’t. “POOOOKE!”
