Office Worker Fired for Calling Job ‘Boring’ on Facebook

I think my title says it all: Office Worker Sacked.
I’m sure her job was boring because other employees must have had extra time on their hands as they were digging around in her facebook profile.

I love that the British say sacked. Personally I think that companies cross the line when they snoop in your private profiles or blogs. Really, if I say my job is boring at a busy cocktail party isn’t the same thing? Goodness… get back to business folks and leave your employees personal lives to themselves.

“Sacked” is a great word.

In a workshop (for job seekers) this statistic was shared with us: 80% of employers do an internet search to see what potential employees have posted.

Yeah, my friend the Headhunter always checks facebook and myspace for profiles of potential candidates.

I read a different article about this:
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1155971/Teenage-office-worker-sacked-moaning-Facebook-totally-boring-job.html
Is it just me or is the mom a total twit? Do you seriously expect what you write on the internet, and apparently have made public, is somehow immune from being read by your employer? Like they shouldn’t act on it just because it’s on your Facebook page? What if you commit murder and confess it on FB? Should you then expect to be immune from prosecution? So how is this different?
Oh yeah, and there is such a thing as privacy settings. Learn them. Use them.

What mom?
I should note how hard those privacy settings are to master.

Weird. Last time I read the article I swear it had a whiny quote from the girls’ mom saying how it wasn’t fair that employers were reading private pages that her daughter posted online.
Edited to add: In fact, someone quotes the line in the comments section. The mom must have realized how stupid she looked and asked them to edit it out! Hmmmmm….

Does that ever work? I think reporters won’t change stories unless she’s totally been misquoted.
Weird that it’s gone though!
