Reality Show: Penitents Compete

I guess we should never be surprised at reality shows:

Turkish television station Kanal T hopes the answer is a ratings success as it prepares to launch a gameshow where spiritual guides from the four faiths will seek to convert a group of non-believers.

The prize for converts will be a pilgrimage to a holy site of their chosen religion — Mecca for Muslims, the Vatican for Christians, Jerusalem for Jews and Tibet for Buddhists.

  1. Post-modernism is dead.

  2. Satire might be dead too.

  3. You may want to see the response to this from the atheist blogger PZ Myers (of “crackergate” communion wafer fame):

Why would I go on a game show with a lose-lose premise?

Myers did make the following comment:

“What next, a show with healthy contestants competing for the chance to be infected with a disease, and the winner gets a long hospital stay?”

The CEO for the Turkish TV network is quoted as saying “We don’t approve of anyone being an atheist. God is great and it doesn’t matter which religion you believe in. The important thing is to believe.”

So … it’s yet another round of anti-atheist bigotry that provokes yet another harsh atheist response to the bigotry.

  4. Yeah, people don’t seem content to play nicely in the sandbox.

I think, as an atheist, that it would be interesting to watch this show.
