I read this in the Seattle Times this morning and thought it was very interesting. I am on my computer so much that I see myself in this, to some extent. However, I don’t think I’ll be getting an iPad or smartphone any time soon; it’s like having too much ice cream in the freezer—-too available and not that good for me. Also, I hate being constantly available to anyone who wants to dial me up. I have a “delay” system for dealing with email; a lot of things I put in a to-do folder to deal with later, so that I don’t pop off an inappropriate response too soon. (yeah, yeah, I’m just as likely to do it later, but at least I’ve then thought about it!)
My smartphone is not that smart compared to many, but that may be just as well - that it can check email and do rudimentary web surfing is distracting enough.
I have a colleague with an iPad and iPhone, and he’s really annoying to be in meetings with because it’s so clear he’s not paying attention (though he thinks he is, I expect). Then again, he would keep busy making lists on paper or whatever before he had those gizmos.
I am using twitter a little bit at work, in order to not fall behind the tech curve quite so quickly. But yeah, it is way distracting, and I’m following less than 10 posters, not hundreds or thousands.
